myZenChecker, Tools Guide To Creative Zen MP3 Player Connection Problem
Non-IT savvy people really had a hard time figuring out how to get their Zen V Plus or Zen Vision M to work! They cannot get their Creative Zen mp3 player to connect or get it recognize by their PC. Majority of the problem reports are due to incorrect or improper operating system.
One of the basic check is to always ensure the Operating System is working at the right version with the preferred Service Pack applied before checking further with Creative or your retailers.
We have built a simple, self-help tool to automate the checking. The system checks are mimic based on our working PC using Win XP Home and Windows Media Player 10 and we have no problems with Zen V Plus and Zen Vision M. This tool is also tested against a few other PCs/notebooks. We did not need to update any firmware and are using the factory default firmware. For Vista users, we have solutions for you too.
Why Service Pack 2 is preferred?
There is an important driver provided by Microsoft and it is wpdusb.sys. This file is part of the MTP protocol and the latest update is in SP2.
Updated version 2.00 on 06/06/07, to allow change in USB registry permission to set Everyone to Full Control. This solution is for those who have all the GOOD results in their OS checks but still encounter Zen player not recognised or detected by the PC. Apparently this method works for some people, see the link below captured in the Creative Forum.
Updated version 3.00 on 15/06/07, to include Fix3 where the Zen player is connected but Media Explorer said its not connected. This suddenly occurs to me and took me quite some time to solve it. So would like to share my solution with you.
Also included Fix4 which is for Windows Vista user, just need to follow the steps to get your Zen recognised or detected.
Updated version 4.00 on 14/07/07, included warning check that media explorer will not function well in Win XP x64 together with IE7. This is particularly important to those having problems with Creative Media Explorer. Also included Fix5 for the rescue/recovery mode of the Zen MP3 players. It can be effective in solving strange issues like Zen MP3 player kept rebuilding its libraries.
Updated version 5.00 on 27/07/07, included check on the version of Windows Media Player(WMP) used in the PC. WMP11 is in a beta version and has been known to have problems such connection issues or cannot update firmware on Creative Zen, Iriver and Song MP3 players. We would suggest to stick to WMP10 instead and that was the version found in the Creative Zen V Plus and Zen Vision Installation CD. Updated version 6.00 on 05/08/07, included a fixup installation in Fix2, this is proven to be very effective for others especially for MTP devices such as Zen V Plus and Zen Vision.

Re: Zen Vision recognized as USB device (problem) - sometimes a PSP charger can solve your problem. Tips: For new Zen Vision, you need to charge for at least 5+hrs in order for it to have enough power for your PC to recognise it.

I have the latest SP2 and all hotfixes from Windows Update. Your scanner said I did not have SP2.

Suggest you re-installed SP2. We encounter cases where the user claimed that SP2 was installed too, maybe it wasn't installed properly in the first place. You can refer to the testimonial above.
I'm so frustrated. Ever since I upgraded to vista, a lot of my programs don't work anymore. That includes my vision m. :(

something wrong with you myZenChecker - it keep saying -to update Windows XP,SP2. I've done it twice and everythng else on my computer is detected this fact.
Only Checker not able to see it.

You can then proceed to Fix2 or Fix3, by the way, is it a new Zen Vision M? You got to charge it for 5+hrs to have enough power for your PC to recognise it
I have an old Zen Vision:M 30G and I am running on XP media with sp2. I never had a problem until windows crashed a few days ago. I reinstalled software, changed usb cords, everything, and nothing helps. I charged it in my car so the battery is full.
I used your software and it said I was good on the first check, I did fix2, and fix3, reinstalled sp2 and when I go to device manager, it doesn't even show up anywhere on the list. I'll take any advice you can give! Thanks!
use the USB port at the back of your PC to connect. Try clean-up, if still cannot do a format of your zen vision.

i would suggest you reinstall SP2 again since the tool says so. Some guys have reinstalled and their problems are solved. you were like to try it too

I bought a new Creative Zen Vision : M almost two days ago. But I can't charge it ! I've let it stay connected in the computer for 8 hours but my computer can still not detect it. I got GOOD on the zenchecker on all 4. I've also tried re-installing SP2. I have installed all the newest hotfixes, but still not working. I've charge it one night trough my USB port on Wii and one night with a wall charger, but no respond from the ZEN, no light, nothing. I did download fix2. It comes a black window for one sec and then it's gone. Can you please tell me exactly what to do in details with the myzenusb, please ?
you just need to double-click on 'myzenusb.bat'. Looks like your zen got charging problem even after using a/c adapter. I suggest you exchange another 1 with your retailer since you just bought it.
Hi! I bought Creative Zen V Plus player. I installed the softwares provided with it except the Windows media player. When I connected my player, the computer said it has found a new hardware and asked if it should look for the drivers. And then, after rebooting, the computer does not detect the player, although it can be charged. I can not put in some songs.
When I used MyZenChecker, it says that I am not using Windows XP, sp2, microsoft internet explorer and I dont have Intel processor. But I have all of the above things. I dont know why its not working.

you have to open myzenchecker using Internet Explorer. It will not work properly in other browsers. Do you have Windows Media Player 10? Try to install it, its important.
Reinstalling (or trying to) SP2 was the worst decision I ever made toget this thing working. Now i have to figure out how to get my computer back to normal and how to get SP2 installed (among other things) again.
Be weary of trying to re-install SP2 you can run into a lot of problems. It's not for everyone.
Thankfully got my computer back to normal - but this thing still is powering up. It's brand new, doesn't charge, doesnt show a screen, still isn't recognized on my computer. Reinstalled SP2, myzenusb, un/reinstalled usb ports. Un/reinstalled software CD. Tried 2 computers, different cables, cleaned up my computer and nothing - It's brand new and i know my luck can't be this bad.
Any ideas anyone? Im pretty sure i'll have to go through a bunch of emails with Customer support with methods i've already tried till I find a solution.

is it a new zen Vision M? You need to charge for at least 5+hrs, is the blue LED light flashing? it means it is charging, else you suggest you exchange a new one as it is still in your warranty period and you have tried so many solutions
Completely brand new. I don't see any lights or anything and it's plugged into my usb port for over 24 hours adn still no power - nothing.
The thing is I bought this from where I work and I read the reader reviews from the site and someone said they returned it and had the same issues im having with the exchanged item but that it took 5+ hours to get going. And that he ended up buying the wall charger.
I'm clueless as to why this isnt powering up at all. It never did and it doesn't seem like it will.
Creative customer support got back to me, but told me to do things I've already done. They even asked me questions about it being powered on and lights and stuff when I clearly let them know the first time that it hasn't powered on at all lol -

yes, an a/c charger would help. zen vision m needs some power in order for your PC to recognise it. do you have a PSP charger? can do too
First I think its ridiculous that I would need to get power some other way to get it working - I love creative - but that's just dumb. Secondly I have no other power adapter that would fit the sync adapter. I actually went ahead and installed a usb 2.0 card last night, but it didnt work.
Creative emailed me back saying to try a different sync adapter without making a purchase - ?how? How else would i try a different CREATIVE sync Adapter - Luckily I can call up products at my job and just thought about trying out the charger at work tomorrow to see if that is the problem - otherwise im just going to exchange it for another one - maybe it's just defective?
We heard some were successful using a USB 2.0 card. You just narrowed down your problem area. Try the charger, hope it will work. While trying out these things, we suggest you keep track of your warranty period, who knows it may just be defective and exchanging it for a new one may just solve your problem. It is also good to keep track of the things you had just did and prove it to your retailer in case they are unwilling to exchange it for you.
Where can I download this myzenusb.bat ... I tried at the link you provided and it seems they want me to pay 2 months or something like that... I've had my player since January, and I haven't been able to charge it. My laptop won't recognize it, and it's a one year old DELL... with all the Windows updates. PLZZZZZZ where can i download this for free???
ahhhh - better - Unfortunately I couldn't open the power charger at work because it was heat sealed and there wasn't one lying around open so I went ahead and talked to the guys in the MP3 dept and they said it probably defective.
I exchanged it today and just plugged it in and thankfully saw the blinking blue light :)
Now strange enough, I think it's possible it could've been the sync adapter. The last one felt to light and loose - this new one feels more secure and tight, so it's possible it could've been the sync adapter.
either way its charging and im getting up nice and early to get it prep'd for my ride into work :D Thanx for making this site and allowing people to vent and figure out their issues with their players ;)

Hi Lucy, the download is free at megaupload, no need to pay for the premium download. The free download is on the right side and you have to wait for 45sec before the 'free download' button will appear and you can click it to download myzenusb.bat

You are making good progress as you can load songs using WMP10. Have you tried Fix5? Take note of the 3 steps, cleanup, update latest firmware, format your zen
the link with the creative automated firmware tool is broken, i have the latest fimware installed, but fix 5 plus step 3 don't work.
the file imported(syncronized) with WMP10 cannot be readed by the zen microphoto. I don't know if i'm doing something wrong with WMP, but the reality is that my devices are not recognized from the creative software with the exception of the diskmanagerand as i shift to zen media they don't see anymore the device as external drive.
I made also the regedit procedure on the usb for the full access.
I belive that is something about windows xp upgrade that have take over the creative sotfware.
actually you dont really need the creative media explorer, its good that your disk manager or windows explorer can access your zen, using it to drag and drop songs into your songs. any error messages shown by your PC?

Hey there! I would like to say thanks so much for your site. I'm good with a computer but your right creative's site is not user friendly. I have been using my ZEN Vison M for about 3 months. Now all of a sudden it keeps rebuilding and I lost all my music! Grrr! I have vista (which I hate) and never needed to install the software. Now all of a sudden nothing works. I uninstalled the program I just installed and did a system restore to see if it would return to normal but of course it had to act like a computer ;-(!!

myZenChecker claims that I've failed the OS check. Everything else is "Good". I'm not sure what's going on.
it could be due to other reasons, are you using WMP11? or IE7?
I had this problem when trying to upgrade the firmware on my Creative Zen Micro to version 2.21.02. I run Windows XP Pro SP2 and Windows Media Player 11.
I DID NOT HAVE TO UNINSTALL WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 TO FIX THE PROBLEM!
My solution to the problem was to rename the music player device to "Creative Zen Micro". To do this, open the Windows File Explorer, click on the Zen Micro device icon, the selected "Rename" from the Explorer "File" menu. Type in the new name - "Creative Zen Micro", then click OK. Then start the firmware upgrade application.
YMMV.

My laptop can't detect my new ZEN. I have already upgraded to SP2 and have checked with myZenChecker in which all parameters seem to be 'good'..but still there is this MTP problem.

Help! I got a used Creative Zen V Plus, and I was playng around with it, and i got to a menu saying, 'clean up', 'Format All', Reload Firmware', and 'Reboot'. So I clicked on 'Reload Firmware', ( I was trying to download music on it. It wouldn't work) and then it undid all the firmware, and now I don't know how to get to a PC-safe site to reload the firmware!
And now that I got to that menu, now it won't let me go back to the main menu to play my music and stuff! Help me please!

HELP)): My computer cannot install the latest creative zen software available on creative.com (the upgrade). and after installing the Creative media explorer, I cannot run it properly, either because the computer cannot recognise my player, or the computer itself rejects the software. LOL at the comment about trying to Find Zenchecker. The routine to find it (register then poke around in the members area for 1/2 hour until you find some random connection) is as much (if not more) trouble than most of us are having with our Creative Software. Seems this site is infected by much of the same 'desigh ethos' as creative products: "Why make it simple when you can make it bloody horrible?!"

Hi, dunno if i'm being slow but i'm really struggling to find where to download the zenchecker from. tried registering but it says my user name doesn't exist despite the fact i just verified it by e-mail. I have a Zen MicroPhoto and recently it has just stopped being recognised by my laptop, doesn't even see it as connected when it is. Please help???

Hello, My Zen died today morning. It was left charging for overnight and I wanted to listen some music and I noted that it is dead as a brick. The blue charging light does not come on, the unit is not detected at all, all buttons are dead and none of the suggestions I could locate are helpful. The USB ports are fine and the XP and ubuntu are not able to see the device. Any hope? Only hope I can think that it is still under warranty. But getting warranty service in India from Creative must be tough (I have no prior experience).

Hi there: i'm an italian creative fan that's a bit disappointed: ihave just bought a refurbished zen 4gb, but i just can't connect to my windows xp SP2 computer. I have tried everything, included a process the creative guys suggested me, but i didn't solve it. The problem is that on other computers it WORKS!! Please help me.

i tried all most all methods mentioned in your forum but my zen v plus still aint workin, it gets charged once connected to my pc but my zen v series media explorer say device is not connected to pc.
while intalling i got a message sayin "Registry value Software\Microsoft\windows\current version\run, CTSyncU.exe cannot be created", still the installation continued after i clicked on ok, thats where i believe it went wrong.

i recently sent my creative zen v plus to creative labs because it wouldn't turn on right,after 4 weeks they sent me back a brand new one,4gb instead of my original 2gb. I then turned it on and started fiddling around with the backround and whatever, i turned it off and then when i connected it to the pc via usb cable(or when i just turned it on again) it went into recovery mode giving me a list of options;clean up, format all,reload firmware and reboot. i've tried all the options except reload firmware because i've no other firmware to upload. i 've also tried reseting it but it's still in recovery mode. how do i get it out of recovery mode? (btw when i try to upload music files or any other files im informed that the mp3 player is not connected or busy. can someone please tell me what to do besides going to a technician
i got the old black and orange zen v and it keep saying recovery mode....i clicked on clean up and when i click on format all its just stay on there....it been on format all screen for hours and nothing happen.
hey gys, i managed to find away of synching ur comp to the pc, if u hold the bottom right button of ur zen for a couple of seconds then let it go, the zen asks you to configure the menu, scroll down to the bottom and select usb host, after this is selected go back to main front page of zen and choose usb host, then connect your pc to usb mode!

I have the zen checker installed and it says I need the SP2 and Windows Media player 10.
But it will not allow me to download SP2 AND I can not download windows media player with my internet explorer. My windows media player keeps telling me I do not need to install because I have the latest media player already. I have tried to roll back from my wmp11 to the wmp10 and Ive uninstalled WMP11 and then tried to install the wmp10, but the same msg keeps poppping up that I can not install it with internet explorer8 and I can only install with internet explorer6... I have tried to install internet exp6 but SAME thing, it wont let me download because I have the latest version of IE.

I have a zen microphoto...the computer I normally sync to has windows xp and its works great. unfortunately, the computer video output is dying and I am unable to read much of the screen. I have a zen vision m and we just recently got a car stereo that has a usb and aux. hook up, but my player won't work with either. When I try usb it goes to the docked and charging screen and won't play, when I try aux. it tries to detect the radio. Can someone help please?
i dont think its supported to run in car stereo. the officially support is on win xp and vista platform only

neither will recognise the zen.
although it does plug in, dock and charge.
we had to transfere music files one by one by drag and drop. NOT using the creative centrale business
it took over 4 hours to put 61 tracks on.
