Fixing Frozen Creative Zen V Plus, Cannot Shutdown Or Switch Off

Creative Zen V Tips

Creative Zen V Reset
Solution: look at the side, near the switch there is a tiny hole, use a paper clip or needle to push it to reset. See the photos above for demonstration. Ahh, my Zen V Plus still have the plastic protective cover when I got it from the box hehe

Do you have to reload all your songs after you do it?

Creative Fan said...

No need, the songs are there :)

I have tried resetting and mine is still frozen. What would be your next suggestion?

Creative Fan said...

Can you do a 'cleanup' by holding both the on switch and play button together at same time?

Mick said...

I'v tried the reset and the power and play button hold, but nothing happens. Also I checked the creative site, and there something said about first connecting your Zen V plus to my PC, wait for 10-15 secs, and then push the reset button, but that also wont help.

Mick said...

Well, my problem seems to be solved :) Because my Zen V plus had jammed and the screen therefore kept on displaying I guess my battery run out, because suddenly I noticed it was turned off. When I tried to switch it on again the battery indeed seemed empty, and when I plugged it into my PC with the USB wire the display showed it was charging a empty battery. No I just hope none of my songs are gone :)

Creative Fan said...

No worries, your songs will still be there when u do a reset. Glad it solved your problem :)

Mine has just dont the same, i think it was because when i put it into my pc all i wanted to do was charge it so i kept turning it off so it would go on the charge screen but it didnt and then after turning it of the 3rd time it froze, its not completely broke is it?

Creative Fan said...

actually for it to charge, no need to turn it off, once connected to PC, it will be automatically charged. ok now, when you reset it, do a 'clean up' to clear up.

First time ever, My ZEN has always worked great until today. Why did it just sieze up and not do any thing???
Anyway your site popped up with just the right info and my ZEN is working great again thanks to your little reset tip
Thanks,

I'm haveing issues with my Zen. It turns on untill the ZEN plus screen and then it frezzes, I cant plug it in to charge the battery because it has to go through that screen and it always freezes.

Creative Fan said...

reset it using the paperclip and choose the 'clean-up' option, if it is still not ok, then i suggest you choose the format option, this will erase all your content

hey, i'm having a problem with my Zen V plus too. But mine is a bit different. I can see the power is on, with the blue lights on the 2 keys switched on. Yet, the screen remains blacked out and shows nothing, even when I try to power it on and do the holdplay+power button. The computer can't detect it either, but when I connect it, the blue lights glow brighter, so it was probably charging somehow. I ccouldn't switch it off, so i thought i'd let the battery die off first, but after 3 days of leaving it be, it still doesn't work. Any solutions? Thanks.

Creative Fan said...

sounds like the screen has gone bad, did you manage to adjust your contrast to the highest level?

Beth said...

help. I can't shut my creative zen off. Tried all of the usual stuff. reset butten etc. I need to clean it up but can't get to that mode becasue when it does reboot after the battery dies it freezes. What do I try next?

Anonymous said...

What I have done is to hook it up to my PC after I reset it and reformat it. Don't turn on your mp3 player, just connect to your USB port, allow the computer to recognize it, then act quickly because there's a chance that the thing will freeze again. It's happened to me a few times.

Anonymous said...

How can you fix it if the screen goes bad? My screen is black and no matter what I do none of the buttons work and I cant use the power button to do anything either. I'v tried conecting it to the computer but It doesn't show. It's worked great for like 4 weeks, and I'd really like to be able to keep it. Please help.
thanks,
-Cally

Hi there,
a week ago i overcharged my zen v plus for about 2-3 hours using usb connection. Fews days after, my zen became frozen in the microphone mode. I coudnt turn it off n after resetting, it did build the library but when the screen appeared (in mic mode), suddenly it froze again :(. I've tried all the suggested actions (hold power on while connecting to usb in few sec + reset, hold power on + hold play button, hold & wait 10-15 sec, reset alone) but all came to a dead end. it did flash the screen but then 'hang'. The battery level really confused me that sometimes it showed full, high, low but then full again.

You guys are legends - I thought I'd lost my Zen forever! Had this problem and just did the disk cleanup and it seems to be working fine. Cheers.

Thank you for this tip!

I gotta say this, I had these problems after 3 months of buying a zen V. I did everything many sites suggested me and they didn't work. So I gave it back to Media Markt where I bought it. And you know what? They also couldn't fix it and they gave me a new one! Now it's working perfectly for 8 months. And now it started doing this all frozing things again. I hope this one doesn't end up like the one before.
Bottom line is that these problems can be permanent. Be careful.

I've tried the reset and power butten but every time it turns back on it freezes how can i fix it???

Andrew said...

That button is a pain in the ****, you have to insert the clip at the correct angle else you will miss the button and could hit something else inside the player... Stupid design!

Anonymous said...

Thank you Andrew, you gave me the final tip I needed. My Zen V froze on the Rarely Heard screen. Until I visited this site I was sticking the pin in the wrong hole - mine has a tiny one at the top too! Hole on side, pin on an angle, worked like magic. Many thanks to all contributors! Maria

I just want to know if there is any trick.

Wacky problem. I lost all the playlists and the Zen rebuilds everytime I turn it on. The biggest problem is that no computer recognizes it anymore. When I plug it in I hear the beep indicating a USB connection and it charges, but it never appears as a device. Since I use Napster, it will not sync and now it is useless since my licenses have expired. HELP!

Help!

My Zen battery was low and died - no problem there! However, I've now tried connecting to 3 differenct PC's using 2 different USB leads and no computer will recognise it, the blue lioght won;t come on either! Tried resetting, pressing reset and on button at same time, same when connected to computer. Don't know how to clean up, or reboot or format? Don't care if I lose everything as can transfer from computer again, just want my Zen working! Help please -!!!

Jimmyboy88 said...

when you reset, it will show you the 3 options to clean up, format or reboot. then choose your option

To those who have blank/ No screen and reset button is useless:

Mostly your player battery is flat( below the min. charging volt for the player ) So if you are not going to use your player for awhile, please fully charge it. This issue apply to handphone batteries too.
In addition, ensure you turn off your player after charge. If you happen to be in FM mode, the player will continue to play until battery flat.
I'm Zen V Plus user, just me 2 cent worth......

I do have a problem, I do have a travel charger and my player can only be charge on 1 of my PC only.... dun know why, can't charge at my work place....

Thanks this worked for me

EVERY time I reset it goes straight into REBUILDING LIBRARY and freezes again shortly after. HOW can I get reformat if I can never get to the screen? Any help please??!!!! It's driving me razy

Jimmyboy88 said...

keep trying
you need to get into the recovery mode where it will show you the format option. you have to format it to resolve your freezing problem

My Zen is stuck in "Recovery" mode. It won't power off. When I try to power it off I get a "Firmware Problem" error message. My computer doesn't recognize the unit when I connect it via usb, so I can't reload the firmware onto it. I tried pushing the reset button but it didn't anything!!

Jimmyboy88 said...

use a paperclip to insert into a tiny hole just below the on/off switch and when in recovery mode select c'clean up' and if it doesnt solve your problem do a format zen

Hi, I can help with the frozen Creative Labs Zen Vplus/V.

As most of you have already posted before, a lot of people have issues with your Creative V freezing. I'm speaking specifically to the people who have already attempted to manually restart your CZ+ using a paperclip. If it continues to freeze after restarting, this is how you can fix it:

1. Turn off your CZV+ completely.
2. Plug it into your USB connector.
3. Turn on your CZV+
4. Allow your Zen Vplus to charge FULLY. I let mine charge for six hours to be safe. (By charging it fully you are allowing it to reboot fully without trying to falsely 'Rebuild A Library'.
5. Hold down the "Play" button and you'll reach a menu that offers you Firmware Restore, Format, and something else. I'm drinking so I don't remember exactly, but format your CZV+.
6. Turn it FULLY off and then turn it on.
7. Plug it into your computer and there you go... rebuild your library. You WILL lose your music but it's better than having a CZV+ that is a paper weight.

I have fixed one other CZV+ this way so I think the guy on YouTube taking apart his Zen is taking a few extra unnecessary steps. The problem with them freezing must have something to do with the Zen not being fully charged. Using logic, not many people have the patience to assume that charging it fully might rectify the freezing issue. Completely charging your Creative Zen V/Vplus WILL allow you to bring up the diagnostic menu. Formatting is the only option to remedy the device from hanging.

I will gladly help anyone with issues regarding this personally. I had the little mofo sitting on my desk for six months (totally useless, mind you), and then yesterday I said to myself, "this device isn't going to outsmart me". So let's all work together and fix this shit. If I can be of any help, email me: nicksterling7@gmail.com

I'm Nick. Just tell me you need help with your CZV+ and I'll do what I can to walk you through what I did. I can only help you if you have already tried restarting it manually using the little plugin hole on the side of the CZV+, AND it freezes on the start up. Otherwise, the information above this post should help you just fine.

Oh, and I've bought hookers more reliable than this little P.O.S. Just sayin'.

if you need sonik or Nick's help, he can be found in our Zen V Plus forums http://forums.mycreativefansite.com/index.php?board=27.0
