OK, so Microsoft has taken out the directsound hardware interface which allows EAX and DirectSound3D in many of the leading PC games in the market now. However, do not fear, Creative has a program called ALchemy that basically translates DirectSound calls to OpenAL in Vista, allowing EAX to be utilized in Vista on X-Fi and Audigy Soundblaster too. This is good news for Audigy users as the previous ALchemy version only support X-Fi Soundblaster cards.
So what do you need to do to enjoy EAX and DirectSound3D sound technology for gaming on your Windows Vista?
You need to download both the Soundblaster driver for Windows Vista AND ALchemy for X-Fi or Audigy Soundblaster. Its free to download for the ALchemy(X-Fi Edition). However, in order to download the ALchemy(Audigy Edition), it does not comes free of charge and users have to US$9.99.
What is ALchemy?
ALchemy is a software application that translates audio calls from one API to another. ALchemy is NOT a hardware driver, and will require that you have an appropriate driver installed and functioning properly first. You can download the latest Sound Blaster drivers for Windows Vista .
