For ZEN X-Fi, it will only work on the folder level for videos or photos. Using pictures as an example, here's how we did it. We put all the pictures inside the folder and transferred it to the device. We open up photos->pictures.
Under pictures, we highlight the folder and press the option button. The options that appeared were as follows:
Next rated Picture
View
Switch View
Delete Folder
------------------------
Start Slide show
------------------------
Protect
Settings
------------------------
Turn off speakers
Volume

I would like to add that you will have to switch the protected content setting from "hide" to "show" to be able to see the "protect" option.
