Creative Launches ZiiO Tablets and ZEN Touch 2: Wireless Entertainment with Pure Android Audio

Forget about ZiiBook, MediaBook, this is the official Creative's tablet: ZiiO! and it comes in 2 sizes, 7 inch and 10 inch. It is powered by the latest Zii chip ZMS-08 processor much better than the ZMS-05 processor seen in the Chinese Speed tablet and OnePad.

Creative is releasing their first line of products which do not run on their ZEN patented user interface. Instead, the ZiiO and ZEN touch 2 runs on Android operating system and which is more appealing to consumers with all the exciting Android apps and games. Like I always said, Creative will not release any common Android tablet that is just like the rest :) The ZiiO allow you to transmit your music wirelessly to your bluebooth speakers such as ZiiSound D5 Wireless Speaker and headphones such as WP-300 Bluetooth Headphones. Besides you get to enjoy your music or movie in clear surround X-Fi audio technology.

If you think you want a smaller version or a portable music device just to listen to your music. Try the ZEN Touch 2 which also run on Android with GPS if you want. And you can also surf the internet using this portable media player.

These Devices Take Pure Wireless Entertainment Beyond Music to Movies and Casual Games.

SINGAPORE – 2 November 2010 – Creative Technology Ltd. today announced the release of a new Pure Wireless Entertainment solution comprising of Creative ZiiO 7” and ZiiO 10” Pure Wireless Entertainment Tablets, Creative ZEN Touch 2 Wireless Entertainment Device and Creative WP-300 Bluetooth Headphones. These new offerings together with Creative’s already extensive range of Pure Wireless speakers, give users everywhere the most complete pure wireless entertainment system available today.

Creative ZiiO Pure Wireless Entertainment Tablet
The Creative ZiiO touch tablet — the world’s first apt-X enabled touch screen tablet — which runs on Android, delivers the best wireless audio performance you will get from an Android™-based tablet in the market, differentiating it from similar devices.

Creative ZiiO tablet also delivers the most seamless, fuss-free Bluetooth pairing experience you will ever have with Creative’s extensive range of speakers and headphones.

All this has been made possible through the know-how gleaned from Creative’s longstanding history of audio engineering expertise that produced the Sound Blaster, X-Fi and a host of award winning portable media players and speaker systems. In the process of creating a Creative ZiiO tablet, Creative applies these high audio standard benchmarks to each tablet through a rigorous series of in-house critical listening tests.

In the actual device, this seamless superior wireless audio quality has been achieved with the Pure Android Audio application and the apt-X codec found in each Creative ZiiO tablet:

1. The Pure Android Audio application
A unique fully upgradable comprehensive easy-to-use integrated suite of applications for the purest wireless audio experience that allows you to access all your audio enhancement and wireless connectivity setting at a touch of an onscreen button. The technologies housed under Pure Android Audio currently include:

* X-Fi Crystalizer for Crystal Clear Audio in Your Music
Digital music today pales in comparison to the real thing. That is because important details disappear in the high and low ranges when you rip your CDs into digital music. X-Fi Crystalizer intelligently restores lost detail and enhances your digital audio content to amazing clarity.
* X-Fi Expand for Expansive Audio in Your Movies and Games
X-Fi Expand intelligently expands your game and movie soundtracks into an immersive audio experience with a breathtakingly realistic depth of field. The effect becomes most apparent when used with earphones – you will feel as if you are listening to your game or movie soundtracks from a pair of high-end speakers instead of earphones.
* Bluetooth 2.1 Wireless Technology
Together with the apt-X codec, Bluetooth allows you to stream high fidelity stereo wirelessly to all compatible stereo Bluetooth speakers and headphones, such as the ZiiSound D5, ZiiSound T6 (the all new premium 2.1 speaker with Surround Sound) and Creative WP-300.

2. The High Performance Low-Latency apt-X Codec
The high performance codec allows Creative ZiiO to deliver high quality audio wirelessly to compatible apt-X Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

Just like other touch screen tablets, the easy-to-use device lets you check your emails on-the-go, watch their favourite movies (Creative ZiiO lets you connect the tablet to a larger screen via a HD cable for an enhanced movie viewing experience if you wish), as well as play your music and casual games. You can also download applications from the Internet and ZiiStore; this versatile touch screen device runs on the Android operating system, enabling you to easily install more applications from tens of thousands of cool choices on the Web for free.

Creative ZiiO tablet is also the first tablet to utilise Creative’s in-house ZMS-08 processor that is engineered to deliver the high performance media-rich processing required of next-generation devices.

Creative ZEN Touch 2 Wireless Entertainment Device
The next offering in the Pure Wireless Entertainment range of devices is the Creative ZEN Touch 2 — great for users looking for a pocket-sized wireless entertainment device. With Creative ZEN Touch 2 you can enjoy pure wireless audio streamed to your favourite Bluetooth headphones and speakers. At the touch of an onscreen icon you can also access the Internet. This means that you will be able to share photos taken from the built-in camera through your favourite website or stay connected with friends via email — all on-the-go!

Creative WP-300 Pure Wireless Headphones
The third offering in the Pure Wireless Entertainment system are the Creative WP-300 apt-X codec enabled wireless headphones, designed to allow you to listen to high quality music from your favorite Bluetooth enabled mobile device, such as a netbook, notebook, smartphone, iPhone, iPad or touch screen tablet. The Creative WP-300 pairs seamlessly and easily to the Creative ZiiO Tablet and the Creative ZEN Touch 2, giving you a compelling wireless listening experience for your music and game soundtracks.

"With the release of the Pure Wireless Entertainment range of devices, we have brought personal entertainment beyond the confines of a single room to the whole house. We have effectively given consumers everywhere a new freedom to enjoy their music, casual games and movies wirelessly throughout the home without being deskbound to a large console or game-station," said Ting Lai Chu, Vice President for the Advanced Multimedia Group at Creative.

"This also further solidifies Creative’s standing as the only company to offer a full comprehensive range of wireless solutions, from one-piece speakers, to multi-channel Surround Sound speakers, to headphones, to wireless entertainment devices and to touch screen tablets. Now everyone will be able to have a house full of entertainment instead of a house full of wires!"

i think its a whole new hope for creative! mp3 players and tablets running on android sounds good to me!

Jimmy, my bet is still on mediabook. This is added bonus. My year end target is still double digits, 2012 year end will breach triple digits. I hope the "wicked one" has joined the party or if not better get in tomorrow. I will digest this with my fundamental review of Creative.

Anonymous said...

Jimmy, it is more like a variant of my mediabook vision.

Jimmyboy88 said...

more collaboration with big boys would be good :))

This is awesome news!
Creative has given me a surprise.

Now its time for the marketing team to do their job.

Anonymous said...

FAILLLLL.......Resistive touch screen again. Hahaha Creative(are they?) still in 19th century.

Anonymous said...

"wicked one", your comparison is out of sync. As for why resistive, perhaps you should wait a bit longer than jump to your usual "wicked" conclusion.

Anonymous said...

Get a life you dumbass. Go buy some tablet and get free stylus . . . LOLLLLLLL

Anonymous said...

"wicked one" has low EQ. No wonder he lost money by dumping Creative shares at huge loss. There's no such thing as free stylus. It is part of the cost. He hasn't look at the whole picture of mediabook concept, that's why he doesn't understand what's going on.

by utilising resistive screen tech, this helps to lower the overall cost, making the price attractive to the end-user. the key gist of this strategy is to open the flood gates to the masses.
an ipad is priced high to attract dummies who value it as a status toy.

Anonymous said...

look at the damn price! $359 for a 8gb model is pretty good value for the dough. one might perhaps compare this to other shanzai tablets available in the local market. apple to apple comparison, i see the preposition of the ziio tablets a much more attractive buy.

pros
- guaranteed customer support by creative (can you say the same for the fly by night shanzai sellers?)
- almost certain firmware upgrades
- x-fi audio enhancements and apt-x codec support
- decent form factor
- custom zii apps
- zii academy (when it's ready)
- zms-08 silicon (hoping its optimised)

cons
- fml resisitive screen tech (pity at the expense for the price)
- no froyo (yet)
- no flash, android market
- no 3g radio
- no dock solutions

OMG ZMS08 ! This is awesome.
BUT WHYYY Resistive ? Thats ALLLL thats between me and buying this!
:(

I don't even know if it does multi touch..

Varuna Singh said...

" But, it’s functional enough, and the prototype handwriting recognition"

I guess creative is really pushing pen input. Which trust me, if done right, Resistive cant be that bad.

Also, You guys should know that the price of these tablets are HALF of what the iPad or Galaxy Tab is.
Plus, its from a respected company.

No idea yet about multi touch.

Anonymous said...

Varuna Singh, resistive touch screens support multi touch, depending on the technology.
That depends on what creative has used for this.

Jimmyboy88 said...

whats the big fuss about resistive screen? look at other features such as x-fi, camera, hdmi-out :)

Anonymous said...

Exactly! It is pointless and childish to just follow blindly what others chase for: tech hungry. They must stay focused and have something that differentiate and a step ahead of others. The tablet market is in a big flux now. Everyone is confused. Majority of those who get it is just for hunger, popular specs and because of curiosity, show off and so on. We have yet to see real needs for a tablet. But great audio and wireless entertainment and visual effect (complete suite of gear you need) together with value for money, easy to use and navigate (a must) and elearning focus makes sense for something new. It will still be a long journey. This is just tip of the iceberg. Patience. Creative, learn from Osim. Restart from Singapore, China and Asia and maybe Europe.

Do not repeat Archos' mistakes!

Jimmyboy88 said...

what are Archos' mistakes?

Anonymous said...

I believe you have heard of Archos' internet tablets. There are so many of them to choose from that you do not know which one, that is lack of focus. As of now, no tablet can be a general purpose machine like a PC. The tech and real needs is still evolving, much like the infancy of PCs. Second problem, it has wow specs that are not well implemented. Sluggish performance turn editors of tech blogs/sites off. Mostly do not give high scores for their reviews. Revenue keep on dropping despite claiming first to intro android tablets and so many have been introduced. Audio quality cannot even match up with iphone/ipad/ipod. They enjoy a lot of free advert from tech blogs but sales still very slow. Many comments claim they will buy but in the end did they buy? I think mostly no. Still suffering losses despite the tablets. Cash position pretty weak. I am not sure about their recently previewed tablets. I am not saying Creative has done better than Archos these past few years. To be fair, officially Creative has done worse. But R&D wise, I think they should be well ahead of the competition vs small rivals. Creative also has a much stronger balance sheet than those small rivals. DO NOT view Creative as toppling Apple or Samsung or any other big boys. Creative just need a few percentage market share to turn around. After that, as Jimmy says "the sky's the limit".

Varuna Singh said...

I'm sorry, I just want to make clear that I have a grudge against resistive technology just because an article said that the resistive screen was a little on the flaky side. Another article liked its screen.
However my bigger concern is multi touch not being there. Multi touch isn't just a fancy way to zoom in and out of pictures or web pages, its in a way another input method. And there are many apps and games that take avantage of that. It just would be nice to see which one Creative adopeted here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually a little happy that there is resistive because there is a huge chance of this being a potential input device to many things. Creative is a sound company, pressure sensitive musical instruments, note taking ( I have yet to see a killer note taking app, that Creative themselves can develop like how OneNote is on the PC). So I actually more for resistive than capacitive.

Its true they did this for price reasons.
Although Creative doesn't want to reviel the processor speed, It shouldn't be more than 1GHz . Thats how much ZMS08 is on paper. However, they might have reduced it to accomodate battery.

Speaking of battery, its rated 10 hours for "general" use and 5 hours of video (I dont know if thats HD).

Speaking of HD, Its sad to see that 1080p content playback is not said anywhere. Although the ZMS 05 can do full HD (1080p), I believe this could be a battery issue.
I still want to know how big (in terms of mA) the battery is.

On a last positive note, you all should realise that this is HALF the price of the iPad or the Samsung Galaxy TAB. So there is a potential market there.

However, another feed for my concerns is that there are already other tablets on the market which have the more "expensive" capacitive screens with multi touch, etc for about the same price.
Yes I admit Creative have done a good work with AptX and all the wireless stuff, but then It just feels a little lacking on some things. Maybe they do have a plan for all of this. People would recognise the Creative brand more than any other random tablet brand. (If Creative is still relevant that is).

Speaking of Wifi, they should have added Wireless N support. Oh well. Im not sure if this has GPS though.

Let me know what you guys think about my rant.

Cheers!

Anonymous said...

Appreciate your input. Part of the mediabook vision. Not likely to have GPS. ZMS-05/8 does not support wireless N. Not so critical as of now. ZiiAcademy + Ziistore + content and tie-up is crucial. Properly implemented features and "it works" concept is important. Or else, another failed product like others.

Anonymous said...

Most of those cheap tablets are a waste of money.

Jimmyboy88 said...

Mr Sim keeps stressing that they are not competing with Apple :)

Creative has learnt from past mistakes like Archos, do you remember creative launches new ZEN every few months during the mp3 player war? now they just focus on the product and introduces new gen eg Vado HD 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, etc

Anonymous said...

Yes. I have been following Creative since Mr Sim demo a talking parrot at SLS.

Jimmyboy88 said...

ziio will be out for sales only in Jan 2011 so they will miss the Christmas sales :(

Anonymous said...

It is not mentioned for sales in US yet and they conducted the preview in Europe if I am not wrong. Testing waters in Singapore and Europe I think. US high ego tech consumers generally still "wicked" towards Creative. The share price target may have to be push back 3 to 6 months since there is a delay.

Jimmyboy88 said...

so it will be a while before we can see it on the shelves

Anonymous said...

if cost is what matters then cherry QQ would have been the number one selling car .

Jimmyboy88 said...

creative is using an old but proven strategy. low cost attract lower end users. just like in those days when computers were expensive, they created cubic99 and they sell like hot cakes

Anonymous said...

look at the past few years balance sheet before you say .."proven strategy".

Anonymous said...

I see, that's how "wicked one" bail out at huge loss.

Anonymous said...

whaaaaaaaaaaaat.......? resistive touch!! using android but applications download not possible. really? am I hearing it right? You kidding right, Creative? Is this a product from a 30 year old company with a name Creative?

OK I will go for one for my 3 year old to play with. Hey! also its time to have a look at all big and small competitors around you. Come up with something for us, Adults.

Anonymous said...

Are you sure "wicked one" can afford one after the loss... And he didn't have any love, not to mention his own family. Go and check up how well archos is doing after claiming first android tablet, poor implementation, no android market access mostly. Creative is betting on wireless audio which no one else currently has done properly, ziiacademy and ziistore, part of my mediabook vision. Android 2.2 and market access will come sooner or later.

Anonymous said...

For kids ebooks, writing and learning, resistive might be a better choice. Leapfrog and others use resistive. Capacitive with stylus tech coming, but not this year.

Anonymous said...

hey dumbass if you are a true supporter log in with a name and post. if not lick my a** .

Jimmyboy88 said...

using android but applications download not possible??? where do you find this clause?

Anonymous said...

ZiiO no 3G ,wifi only. To access android market you need 3G.

Anonymous said...

"wicked one" needs to attend some clinical sessions to improve EQ.

Anonymous said...

Guys/Gals, don't get personal. Behave like an adult , express your like or dislike, support or oppose about the product and not to the commenter . One guy/gal here calling every other person a wicked one . His/Her comments are getting personal too. Don't go overboard; things might take an ugly turn here. Jimmy be warned. Its time to have a control over YOUR website.

"ZiiO no 3G ,wifi only. To access android market you need 3G."

Android market can be accessed with wifi.

Anonymous said...

There’s no 3G, so the ZiiO doesn’t support the official Android Marketplace.

Offically it doesn't. But you can install it yourself (apk).
Its just not allowed as per Google's mind. Hence Creative obey them. If Google is not going to offer support for the market, why should Creative risk something that would hurt the over all experience of the tablet ?

Those who know what they are doing will install the Market. Those who don't care about all the technical stuff, will use the ZiiStore.
I don't know how Creative wil distribute and how frequency, but the apps on the ZiiStore better be good.

Other wise using and saying that they use "Android" is nothing.

Anonymous said...

Soft head Stylus is now available for capacitive screen. Price about S$40++

Jimmyboy88 said...

technically you dont need android marketplace to install apps. i have personally done it for my android phone. but i think creative is trying to promote their own ziistore instead of the usual android marketplace. maybe they have more to offer in the ziistore :P

Jimmyboy88 said...

woah there's really alot of discussion and buzz here about ziio, i just created the ziio forum and would like to invite you guys to talk about it over there :) http://forums.mycreativefansite.com/index.php?board=39.0

I've been waiting for Creative to announce a tablet for months because I love the sound quality of their devices (especially the Zen X-fi). That being said, this announcement is bizarre to me.

I don't want to have to use a stylus on a tablet. That seems out-dated and it's a hassle to keep up with styluses. Also, we don't know what apps will be pre-installed or available for download. Plus, Creative is releasing this so late in the season, that reviewers will have little time to test it before the holidays.

I hate to say it, but I'm turning to Archos 70. You just get so much more for the money.

There's no android market on this. Perhaps no google apps as well and not forgetting the resistive touchscreen. Alot of potential but really... so much emphasis on audio tech at the expense of the "fun" aspects of android tablet technology. Android market, Google apps, cutting edge Audio and Video = An android tablet to rule them all....

Jimmyboy88 said...
