Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS) Review

What is the Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)?
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
Recently, I got the chance to play and have fun with one of Creative’s another android product, this time, its the Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS) mp3 player. Its an large screen 3.2 inch mp3 player running on android 2.2 froyo instead of the usual ZEN patented interface. Unlike any other Android mp3 player in the market, it's an entertainment portable media player with adjustable X-Fi audio technology for your audio pleasure.

The ZEN Touch 2 connects easily via bluetooth with other audio products such as Creative's wireless speakers like ZiiSound D5 and the wireless Creative WP-300 headphones. Together they form the pure wireless entertainment ecosystem.

I will be showing you lots of photos and videos to proof our point.

Accessories
There's not many accessories at the moment, but you can get some of them from Creative.

Design / Build Quality
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
It is made of plastic and does look quite thick, about 0.4 inch thick. There 's a 2 meg pixel back facing camera for video capturing and photo taking and an HDMI output to project out to a screen. (HDMI cable not included)

Screen
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
The screen is 262k color resistive touch and has a large 3.2 inch wide (diagonal) screen. When we say it is resistive touch, technically it works having 2 layers of screen to sense your touch. When you touch the screen, you can feel it depressed downwards a little bit. Then from there, the screen can detect which point did you touch.

As a resistive touch screen, we can hear many reviewers giving the thumbs down. But its not that bad, once you get the hang of it. Its pretty ok and I can surf the internet or play angry birds with no problem.

I think you will be perfectly fine using your fingers to do the navigation on the touch screen.

User Interface
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
Although Creative ZEN Touch 2 uses an modified Android version 2.2, but as an android portable device, you can customize your home screen or include any android apps or your own icons, apps or shortcuts anywhere.

There's also no Android Marketplace to download Android apps directly. But you don't really need Android Marketplace. Just go to 3rd party website such as www.freewarelovers.com and download all the .apk files into your ZEN Touch 2.

The unit that I have is already in Android 2.2 froyo version. Earlier, it was in Android 2.1 and Creative does make an effort to update their Android firmware.

Controls
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)

There's some shortcut touch screen controls just below the screen which you can select 'options', 'return', 'home', 'search' button. I find these handy as I can quickly jump to the home screen very easily. But on the other hand, I find the controls taking too much space and occupies almost 1/3 on the surface of the mp3 player.

Transferring Media
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
Transferring media is easy via USB cable and no Creative Centrale or any conversion software is required. As long as they are the supported formats as stated in the technical specifications.

When connected to your PC or laptop, you will be prompt to 'mount' your ZEN Touch 2, select this option and your windows will pop out a message to let you view the files in the ZEN Touch 2. Choose the folder you want and start transferring your media by dragging and dropping them.

SD Memory
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
The Creative ZEN Touch 2 has a Micro SD card slot where you can upload your content. Thus allowing you the flexibility of accessing more music and movies directly from your microSD card. And allows you to expand your space capacity.

Wireless (WIFI, bluebooth)
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
There is a built-in IEEE 802.11 b/g support, so you can connect to your own wireless router or all the wireless hotspots in town. You can use your Creative ZEN Touch 2 to surf the Internet, access facebook, twitter, any social media website and check your emails anywhere you go.

The bluetooth allows you to connect to any of Creative wireless speakers so that you can play your music audio on those speakers.

Battery Life
Although battery life is not mentioned on the specifications, based on my experience, it can only last 4 hours after it is fully charge. It seems like the battery run out very fast and I have to charge it everyday. I also found that if you left it on standby mode, it will also consume such % off your battery.

Sound Quality
The Creative ZEN Touch 2 comes with android apps call the 'Pure Android Audio'. Its not adjustable but I tried using it with the ep-630 earphone and the sound is perfect! You can really hear the highs and lows of your music. When I was listening to Beyonce's Halo, I would almost swear that she was just singing it beside me :)

Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
The ZEN Touch 2 (with GPS) features Digital Compass and GPS-ready capabilities to help you orientate yourself. I tried 'GPSTest' android apps from third-party applications and the compass is working fine. However, for the GPS, I tried using both Google maps and Papago, it seems like the GPS will not work unless there is data connection. Which means you have to be connected to the internet wirelessly. This will not work if you are outdoors and when there are no wireless hotspots to connect.

Radio
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
The Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS) version also comes with FM radio and you can tune in to your favourite radio station if you are ever tired of listening to your own songs.

Speaker
Creative ZEN Touch 2 (GPS)
If you noticed, the built-in speaker at the back of the Creative ZEN Touch 2. With such small size, it does sound very good.

Conclusion
Creative ZEN Touch 2 is unique and there's no other Android tablet quite like it. The Pure Android Andio feature works pretty well.

The large screen 3.2-inch LCD is certainly clear and colourful enough to do justice to video and photo content, and to enjoy feature-length clips on the move.

File support is also very good here and the ZEN Touch 2 is able to handle a range of conventional formats as well as less common FLAC and AAC audio. Yes, it is supporting the OGG audio too :)

The bottom line is the ZEN Touch 2 is unique and has better audio quality. I like it, especially the audio and touch screen, I can still recommend the ZEN Touch 2, it’s really value for money.
