ZiiLabs 100-Core ZMS-40 Processor Ready For Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

Creative unveils the latest Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A9 and 96 StemCell Media Processing Cores Enhance Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) at double the performance and longer battery life. They are ready to take on the world with their Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) tablets and will showcase them in the coming annual CES 2012.

Besides, Creative is also going to announce a alliance with several major Chinese partners in China to build tablets for educational purpose. I bet that Creative will also launch Ice Cream Sandwich Android tablets for the consumers too.

Let's all stay tuned to it :)

SINGAPORE - 4 January 2012 - ZiiLABS, a pioneering media processor and platforms company (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Creative Technology Ltd), today unveiled its ground-breaking 100-core ZMS-40 StemCell Media processor optimized for Android. The ZMS-40 combines 96 of ZiiLABS' StemCell media processing cores with four 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs to deliver stunning multi-tasking application and media processing performance.

By doubling the number of StemCell Media processors compared to the previous ZMS-20, the ZMS-40 delivers twice the peak media performance, while running the larger array at lower clock speeds to achieve the same performance leads to greater energy efficiency and a reduction in power consumption of up to 50 percent. With 2X the performance and 2X the power efficiency, the ZMS-40 delivers ground-breaking media capabilities to handheld devices such as tablets, including ultra-high-resolution H.264 HP decoding of up to 3840x1080 for true 1080p 3D stereo, a rich and interactive desktop browsing experience, 2560x1600 (WQXGA) display resolution support, higher-quality video encoding and immersive OpenGL ES graphics and future support for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).

The up-and-coming HEVC standard (also known as H.265), besides other qualitative benefits, can also increase data compression ratio by up to 2X as compared to H.264. These technology wizardries are achieved by requiring many more times the computational complexity. HEVC claims to target the next generation Hi-Def TV market which can support scalable resolutions from 320x240 to 1080p with improved picture quality in terms of noise level, color and dynamic range, and all the way up to an incredible resolution of 7680x4320. Being fully programmable and with their massive parallelism, the 96 cores of StemCell Media processors can easily handle the onerous computational requirements of this new CODEC and support higher resolutions that are beyond today's display systems.

The latest ZiiLABS MandelMark data highlights how the increase in size of the StemCell array results in a 2X increase in performance without increasing power consumption. MandelMark is ZiiLABS' OpenGL ES 2.0 shader implementation of the Mandelbrot algorithm and is designed to test the computing performance of modern GPUs. Additional information on MandelMark can be found at: www.ziilabs.com/mandelmark

The ZMS-40 supports ZiiLABS' enhanced Android 4.0 implementation that complements the standard Android offering with a rich suite of software to exploit the massive computing power of the ZMS processor and includes support for:

ZiiPhoto for intelligent photo browsing, 3D slide show and special photo effects,

ZiiCamera for real-time preview and capturing of photos with 3D effects; live ultra high resolution 40 megapixel Panoramic photo capture in one sweep; and high dynamic range images,

ZiiVideo for advanced video playback including 1080p WebM (VP8) support and trick modes (such as reverse play, frame-by-frame advance and reverse, multi-speed play and more), and skip to any part of a movie by browsing a timeline with thumbnails,

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi's Crystalizer and CMSS-3D audio effects.

ZiiLABS' enhanced Android supports not just cloning of the device display onto a TV but also APIs to enable dual independent displays, where the TV is showing a different screen from the device. For example, a user could be browsing the web for information while watching an HD video on the TV all at the same time. This usage model has a tremendous range of applications, and is only made possible due to the power of the ZMS-40.

"The ZMS-40 continues our strategy to deliver ground breaking processors, hardware platforms and software solutions that enable our partners to differentiate and win market share in the Android tablet space," said Hock Leow, President of ZiiLABS. "Our customers demand innovation and ready-for-market solutions and with ZMS-40, JAGUAR and the latest Android software we continue to deliver phenomenal performance, features and value."

"We are already working through the draft specifications of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and expect the flexibility and performance of the ZMS-40 to meet the challenging computation complexity of this emerging CODEC in order to deliver higher-quality and lower bandwidth." said Tim Lewis, Director of Marketing at ZiiLABS.

"The tablet market for China is going to explode, especially with China's recent emphasis on digital textbooks, digital school bags and digital classrooms for all of its students. We have gained tremendous momentum by working with various partners in this vertical segment of the market alone during the past year," said Sim Wong Hoo, Chairman and CEO of Creative Technology Ltd. "The ZMS-40 further allows us to design and develop a breath-taking 4th generation Android tablet aimed squarely at the Chinese market. Leveraging on the vast Chinese computing technologies and educational content expertise we have mustered over the decades, we have developed a beautiful, ultra-slim, ultralight Chinese tablet with Chinese characteristics and unprecedented performance based on the ZMS-40 and Android 4.0 with our very own Chinese platform."

"We are now forging ahead to form a Chinese Tablet Alliance with several major Chinese partners both in the horizontal and vertical market segments to further develop, build and market this timely tablet, ” added Sim. “Details of this Chinese tablet and the alliance will be unveiled soon."

Android 4.0 (ICS) tablets and associated design-kits based on the ZMS-40 will be showcased at the ZiiLABS suite (Venetian) in Las Vegas between 10 - 13 Jan at the CES 2012 tradeshow.

its a new hope for Creative :)

It looks good. However Creative needs to show how it could utilise the 100-core media processor. An independant party should also help to do benchmark them against the likes such as Intel Media processor, Snapdragon SoC and the rest. Creative is slow by 2-3 years and it needs to showcase it now as a real product. Besides ARM, it should also try to work with Intel/AMD unless all software media providers like Microsoft, Adobe and so on shift to provide ARM supports.

Yes of course . Hope they put up a good show this ces 2012 and proof it to the world

creative already lost the opportunity to prove the world what zii can do by creating crappy ziio tablets.

Jimmy Loh said...

the ziio tablets are not as good as samsung galaxy tab but in terms of price the ziio is more economical

so cherry QQ is the top selling car in singapore . right?

No one is interested in 100,1000 or 1 million cores if there's no real tablet utilising it. Creative is like a snail or they simply show they are sloppy. 2-3 years and no results. They are always slow. Drivers slow. Update slow. Everything slow. All Rubbish and Junk products. Nothing works properly. Prove me wrong!!!

i think we dont have to wait too long, CES 2012 is just around the corner from 10 to 13 Jan 2012
lets see if they can proof you wrong :)

Hi...hope someone can clear my doubt. I happen to notice iLuv Creative Technology winning multiple CES Design
and Engineering Awards again this year. I am just curious, does iluv have any link to Creative? Is there any partnership going on?

Hope they could show how we can fantasy with 100 cores. If not, i felt Creative can pack up and go home. There's no point if it can't show us how the cores are utilise and how the cores can optimised for high performance Andriod tablets.

what so great about jon rubinstein?

I think Jon Rubinstein won't be able to make a difference in Creative. His talent would be wasted. Something is really very wrong with this company like it is infested with worms and in very bad shape. I felt it has a serious fundamental issue which I find no one else can change this company. If there's dedication, the company won't fail so miserably. Look at Steve Jobs, he keeps trying and eventually he succeed. Good people follows him. For Creative, it is the opposite which i find something is very wrong with this company.

buy or sell?

the philosophy between Steve Jobs and Sim Wong Hoo are totally different. Jobs would do everything especially to redevelop the hardware and software so that it works very well and Apple can be a leader and not a follower. When you are no longer a leader, no one will want to follow you. Look at Zii, does any company dare to OEM it to power any of our tablets, pc or smart phone till date? Why is that so? Because that company is known for it's non-dedication and has serious fundamental issues. It needs to convince itself that it needs to be dedicated and be responsible to fix any software or hardware bugs if it does not meet the customer expectations. It's ironic that if you ask anyone in the street whether they would buy any Creative product. They would boo you off. This is in sharp contrast in the early days where everyone would get Creative. Creative needs to work on its PR work, it got bad image, it got bad support. I admire Steve Jobs for his perservance and would support his company for a long time even he's dead now. His product represent me. To me, Creative is as good as dead if it does not change its doings. To think, their latest MP3 is so thick. i felt you should just give up and sell your stocks away. Give yourself a chance and stop damaging your health or don't put too much hope that it will become another Apple because it does not have the Apple ingredients.

everyone is admiring steve jobs now because ipod, ipad and iphone is a big success and everyone is singing praises now. when steve jobs was kicked out of apple, were there any steve jobs fan back then?
look at creative 20 years when sound blaster was a big hit, mr sim was also a big figure back then... so it depends on the time and i think its a cycle..you get your up and low

Steve Jobs never gave up when he was kicked out of apple. In fact, he built that new company that gave us the new iOS today. That iOS can runs on all its mobile devices. Sound Blaster was great but its hardware potential has been limited by a few selfish person in the company. That was a very big mistake. I remembered that it resulted in million of hits in the Creative website to find out the reason. It's really not about ups and downs. In fact, during that time, if Creative makes its software support as great as its hardware. It won't resulted in this bad situations. Perhaps partly Microsoft and Intel are to be blame but when their supporters find out that Creative did some limitation in their software. No one forgave Creative until they found that Creative was not on their side. No one blamed Microsoft and Intel despite they have a part to play too. Back then, millions of computer run cripple or cranking sound and all begging for alternatives. It couldn't be run of Linux too. This is what happen. Don't underestimate support. Everyone tries to move away from those evils.

Jimmy Loh said...

microsoft is full of shit, keep on changing their driver and architecture. win vista is a flop and cause a lot of issue to the sound blaster. no choice, a sound card is just a computer add-on peripheral so it depend heavily on the OS be it win, linux or Mac OS
